As summer draws near construction season has begun. Dump-trucks and diggers are a common site on McMaster University’s campus as construction crews ready the foundation for a new student residence.

New Building Adds Modern Edge to North Campus

At twelve stories the Peter George Centre for Living and Learning will take McMaster University to new heights. Named after the former president of the university, the new building will provide 359,000 square feet of new residences, classrooms, meeting space, and daycare. Once completed it will become the largest building on campus.

Initial designs of the project show a unique modern glass and steel structure contrasting the older buildings nearby. The Living and Learning Centre will house new student amenities and lecture halls in the podium at the base of the tower. Above this a crescent shaped structure will accommodate 500-students.

University Developing more Housing Options for Students

The building represents a new wave of development at McMaster University. Decades of stalled development have created a need for new student residences near campus. Neighbourhoods around the University have been overwhelmed with student housing.

The Living and Learning Centre is the first of many new developments being created by the University. Projects in Hamilton and Westdale will follow shortly providing students with more housing options and amenities.

I will keep a close eye on this new building sharing updates as the structure is completed! Based on the initial designs what do you think of this development?
